City gets rain but no respite from heat, humidity
Mumbai: The city is
witnessing slightly heavier showers, but temperatures refuse to
dip much. On Saturday itself, with 36.6 degree Celsius, Colaba
witnessed the highest June temperature in the last 10 years, and
high temperatures continued till Monday.
Highest temperature so far was 36.1 degree Celsius in June
last year, overtaken four days in a row on June 4, 5, 6 and 7
this year with maximum temperatures hovering between 36.4 and
36.6 degree Celsius.
Santa Cruz too recorded its highest maximum temperature on
June 1 with 35.7 degree Celsius, a record on par with the
highest maximum in June 2007.
However, after Monday, the temperatures seemed to have come
a bit under control. “With the infrequent showers on and off in
the city, the temperatures are bound to dip a bit. But it still
doesn’t mean that the monsoon is here. These are still only
pre-monsoon showers,’’ maintain officials at weather bureau.
According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the
monsoon didn’t move much beyond Banglore in Karnataka and
Cuddapah in Andhra Pradesh in the south on Wednesday, where it
was reported to have been on Tuesday. The IMD predicts that
there may be scattered rainfall in Mumbai for the next two days.
“The monsoon will take another two to three days to arrive
in Mumbai. Until then, there will be scattered showers,’’ said
an IMD official.
Incidentally, 0.3 mm rainfall was recorded in Colaba and 72
mm recorded in Santa Cruz over Tuesday night. Though the weather
remained cloudy during the day on Wednesday, there were however,
only traces of rainfall recorded in Santa Cruz while Colaba
remained dry till 8.30 pm. The maximum temperature in Colaba on
Wednesday was 34.2 degree Celsius with relative humidity of 71%,
Santa Cruz recorded 33.9 degree Celsius with 69% relative
humidity.
