Polluted water for Goregaon locals

The Birhanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reduced the water cuts, but several parts of the city still continue to face the water crisis. But, for residents of Goregaon (West), short supply is not the only problem. The water that is supplied to their homes is contaminated.
"Water is supplied in the morning for an hour. But, in the first half-hour, the water we get is contaminated," said Iman Dikham, a resident of Bhagat Singh Nagar in Goregaon (West). "Kids in every household suffer from some or the other illness. We have been consuming such contaminated water for a year now."
Worse still, the residents of Jawahar Nagar have bunch water connections, where ten families have one water connection. "There are long queues to fill water in the morning. 50% of the water is wasted as it is contaminated. The remaining has to be shared with adjoining hutments," said Daksha Patel, another resident.
Besides, the locality has waterlines running inside the drains. "There will be no pressure in the water if we shift the waterlines above the drains. Due to this, the water supplied always has a foul smell," said Rajesh Sharma, a resident of the area.
Reviewing the grim water situation in Goregaon (West), Congress leader Nitesh Rane took potshots at the Shiv Sena-ruled BMC. "What is the civic body doing? The BMC leaders should be ripped off their responsibilities if they can't provide potable water to the people," said Rane.
Although the residents have registered several complaints at the ward level, BT Kapse, assistant commissioner of P-South ward, said, "No new complaints have been registered. There were some complaints few months back, but all those have been resolved."
