Mumbai:
The next time your order your favourite sea-food delicacy, think
about what you won’t see on your plate. According to a recent
study by the PETA India, not only do fish contain deadly toxins,
but also the manner in which fishing is carried out could make
your stomach churn.
VIOLATION OF LAW: Protected species like dolphins are being sold
openly in markets
PETA India on Wednesday released a report on the
fishing industry, exposing violations of laws, environmental
degradation, risks to human health and cruelty to marine
animals. The organisation also released a video showing the
torture that dying fish endure.
PETA has exhorted people
in Maharashtra to stop eating fish. The organisation has cited
studies that show fish as intelligent animals who are capable of
feeling pain. “Fish undergo excruciating compression when they
are dragged out of great depths,” said PETA’s Nikunj Sharma.
The group also found endangered species such as sharks
and dolphins being sold openly and observed filthy and
unhygienic markets.
Sharma says, “As fish flesh and fat can contain high
concentrations of chemical residues, as much as nine million
times than that of the water in which they live, eating fish
poses serious health risk.’’
PETA says that people who eat fish also ingest
polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which affect neurological
development in offspring, sperm motility and foetal growth and
can lead to lower IQ, slow reflexes, attention deficit disorder
and reduced memory capacity.
