Dengue cases on the rise in Delhi

Friday, November 11, 2005 (New Delhi):

Over 700 cases of dengue have been reported from Delhi and adjoining areas this year.

"In Delhi, we have received about 700 cases so far, out of which 200 are from outside Delhi. There have been 8 deaths, four in Delhi and four in surrounding areas," said Mukesh Goyal, Chairman, Standing Committee, MCD.

Experts say there are many reasons for this increase. While uncontrolled population growth along with rapid and unplanned urbanisation in developing countries is one reason, many believe that global warming and drastic temperature changes could be another factor.

"There are many reasons for the increase. Global warming is one since the increase in temperature helps the virus. The other reason is the rapid urbanisation. When there are more people living close to each other, the disease gets transmitted faster," said Dr Shahid Jameel, Virologist, International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB).

With no vaccine available for the disease and the treatment being just symptomatic, experts believe there is a need to build an integrated prevention program rather than waiting for an epidemic to occur.
